The Most Crude Post Ever

But it's been so long since I posted anything, probably no one will see it anyway. ;-)

My "career" as an Indiegogo/ Kickstarter supporter is somewhat spotty. Most creators have come through with their promises even if most of that group has been late in delivering.

Rob Mackinnon / Vigilante Comix and their Deborah Daring book has been among the most reliable projects I've supported. I enjoyed it a great

When I received issue number four some time last year, I recall being a little disappointed that the series would only run for six books in total and hoping that a sequel series would be announced in the future.

My wish was half-met. As Deborah's book prepares to come to an end, Vigilante announced the following series would be crowd-funded next month.

Our tale begins 300 years ago in the Athabasca River area of the Canadian North West, when a dying Cree shaman places a curse on the white settlers that brought disease to the people of his tribe.
Fast forward to 2016 when the Shaman's spirit is awakened by a terrible wild fire that ravages his burial ground near the oil town of Fort McMurray.
Let's have a better look at some of that art by Dario Carrasco..

Pretty swell stuff. MacKinnon has other irons in the fire in 2019 in books called Hardboiled and Hildebrand - Valkyrie. It's very encouraging to see Vigilante Comix growing. You can find out about their plans on his recently updated and expanded website.

Now I have to be honest and admit that initially, by its name, I believed that this was a bit of a rip off from the Crude story that has been running through the True Patriot Presents anthology book from Chapterhouse.

Reading more about MacKinnon's concept cleared that up quickly; a name similarity appears to be all they truly have in common.

It did, however, remind me that much like Deborah Daring's adventures appear to be coming to an end, at least temporarily, Crude's (and that of all the characters that appear regularly in TPP) may as well. The most recent issue, #11, was released on January 2nd and it confirmed that the series is coming to an end.

The penultimate issue of True Patriot Presents. Get in on the ride while you can! This issue features Dominion Jack! Crude! The Canadian Sentinel! The Family Dynamic
Look for an oversized issue #12 in less than two months, plus important True Patriot News!
That's quite the drag but at least there's a hint of something being on the horizon.

I suspect that anyone reading about Canadian superheroes already supports True Patriot Presents but if you do not on the basis that it is a digital-only book or simply don't hear about the book being released, I would suggest your reconsider and/or look into it. At $2 a pop on Comixology, it is an inexpensive way to support Canadian creators.

True Patriot Presents #8 is out!

True Patriot Presents has found a way to release its issues just as I begin to assume that the series is done for. Number 7 came out in January and while I think we all know to not expect an exact bi-monthly schedule, by now things were starting to seem a little bleak.

We hadn't heard much chatter about issue 8 leading up to its release. Often it will be teased a few days in advance. Not this time; While glancing at the new books for the week, there it was in all its Canadian glory.

As the cover above reveals, most of the regulars are here. The book leads off with an action-packed installment of The Red Ensign made to look, as usual, as though you are viewing it on a WW2 newsreel. The copied image below doesn't quite capture it adequately but it's a neat touch.

The Family Dynamic follows with a continuation of the stories told in the three-issue limited series from DC Comics from some years back.  We are at the beginning of the second issue from that series at this point. These pages focus on a crime-fighting duo called Blackbird and Little Wing who are very close to the family.

I quite like these two and when the old DC material runs out, I would be interested in seeing them in a story of their own.

Crude is next, but seen relatively little in a story which serves more to effectively build up the threat that the enemy presents.

The book concludes with some heavy Dominion Jack family drama though again, the supporting cast gets the bulk of the action.

30+ pages for $1.99 US.

It's encouraging to see that all four stories are to be continued. I know that guarantees nothing but it at least displays an intent to go on publishing this anthology and sets my mind at ease on that level.

So with that in mind, could we maybe expect #9 for Canada Day, even if it's a little within the usual bi-monthly expectation? Hope so.

ICYMI Art: Dominion Jack by Steve Rude

Jack Briglio shared the image yesterday as part of his Merry Christmas message to friends, family, etc.

As a True Patriot & Dominion Jack treat, thought I’d share an image of a gift I received from none other than the “Dude” himself, Steve Rude! His take on Dominion Jack and Mashup. Cool or what, eh? 🙂 Enjoy!
I’ll have some shots from the next True Patriot Presents Dominion Jack chapter that Hugh and I are cooking up in the new year! The story is heating up...
No better gift than one you can also share.

The "Hugh" being referred to is no doubt Hugh Rockwood. Hugh has handled art duties on the last couple of installments of the Dominion Jack stories in True Patriot Presents and apparently will continue to do so. He also contributed the cover below to the third issue of Captain Canuck Chapterhouse Archives book. Alas, it never saw print.

Early Look at Northguard, Volume 2

Being that I found the image on the Chapterhouse Publishing website, I don't think it's wrong or even premature to share it.

The fan favourite super-spy returns! Still reeling from the events in Captain Canuck, Phil Wise is struggling to adapt to civilian life. But when Phil is marked for death by the deadly assassin Wolf, Northguard is thrust back into action!
Written by Anthony Falcone
Cover by Alex Perkins
This was the last book listed in the "coming soon" section and is apparently available for pre-order. You'll probably have to wait a while though because even its solicitation text has yet to be released to media.

In all likelihood, the book will be promoted as a September release in a few days. Whether it's actually out on time is a whole other issue. Still, cool to see.

I took a look at Giovanni Valletta's Twitter feed and a couple of months ago he shared the following image, describing it as work being done for Chapterhouse.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark and assume that this is "Wolf" from the book's description above.

Canadian Creators Omnibus

New on Comixology as of today for $1.99 (U.S., naturally).

This 280+ page collection of 14 stories sprang to life out of the original Kickstarter for The Adventures of Auroraman and highlights some of the most fun and entertaining Canadian independent comics being produced today! Featuring stories about Auroraman by Jeff Burton, The Canadian Corps from Andrew Lorenz’s September 17 productions, Donovan Yaciuk’s Spacepig Hamadeus, Jason Loo’s Pitiful Human Lizard even makes a brief appearance! A great way to get a taste of some of these comics, characters and creators all in one place.
The original description of the Omnibus, when it was offered as a perk to the Auroraman campaign, also included the following:
Sam Noir and Christopher Yao’s Major North, Gary Boyarski’s Jack Grimm...a piece from Mark Shainblum co-creator of Northguard, the 3D comic Road Trip by Jason Sylvestre, a story by James Zintel, Hockeypocalypse by Jeff Martin, work from Eric Theriault, a story from Ryan Howe and a story from Elaine Will.
Credit to Chapterhouse Publishing for using their platform to promote this talented bunch and their respective characters.

Edit: I bought it as a show of support and unfortunately, Major North is not included.  Evidently something changed after the original solicitation.

Arrowhead Merchandise Now Available

If you're a fan of the True Patriot books and characters (and if you're reading this, it's hard to imagine you aren't) then you might be interested in the merchandise being offered on TeePublic.

The Canadian super hero from the pages of TRUE PATRIOT in a very Canadian design... ARROWHEAD with maple leaves and a nod to the the vintage AVRO conspiracies that his origin is inspired by!
TeePublic also offer phone and laptop cases as options. Nice way to support the True Patriot projects(s) and creator Jay Stephens in particular.

Two-Chapter Review: Captain Canuck - The Terror Birds

I seldom wrote reviews on the previous version of this blog. I described the contents of books frequently but seldom expressed an opinion as to the quality of that content. Not only is quality a very subjective thing but having never published anything myself, I don't think it's my place to criticize those who have.

With the relaunch of this site, I wanted to be a bit more vocal. I won't review every single item I read but if one specific aspect of a book can illustrate a point I consider to be potentially valuable to creators, then I shall comment on it. It's just a different method by which to be supportive, but one I find very tricky, frankly.

And with this in mind, let's take a peek at the Captain Canuck: The Terror Birds novel.

The title of this post is quite literal. I've only read two chapters of Terror Birds. Yet I've already come across an issue that seems to be becoming more and more common; A lack of proper editing.

Did every editor on the planet suddenly drop dead? Is there no one out there available to point out errors in punctuation and/or grammar and/or spelling anymore?

Hey, mistakes happen. There are probably a couple in this post! They seem to be more and more frequent in the material I read these days, however.

I've been told that finding errors is not the purpose of reading books. Of course it isn't. I know this. I don't WANT to find them. That's exactly why this post is being written.

Here's why I consider these small errors to be an issue, even as just a fan.

  • They're distracting. Imagine watching a movie and the screen goes black for one second every minute. Would that not partially prevent your from being totally engrossed? Can you really enjoy a song when the recording skips? Errors have the same effect.
  • They can cause the story to be unclear. One story I read recently (not Canadian, mind you, just used here for the sake of example) used the word "hanger" instead of "hangar" repeatedly in a chapter. They are totally different things, aren't they?
  • They can make you look second-rate. Your delivery can take away from your content. When you read a comment to a newspaper article from someone who can't get "there/they're/their" sorted out, do you not question the writer's credibility just a bit?

Here are a couple of examples from Terror Birds.
...Redcoat tried to unsuccessfully to conceal a yawn.
Obviously the underlining is mine. This is probably a matter of attempting to improve a sentence after it was written and inadvertently going in the opposite direction. Later, a sentence begins "Their current was position was well outside...". Probably an easy mistake to make.
He always did Mr. Bobo had no problem with authority he was very susceptible to praise.
Wouldn't punctuation have made the above sentence far more clear?
The creature tore out a draw.
Or a drawer, rather.

Here's a big part of the problem; spellcheck won't draw your attention to that error because "draw" is a word. Someone attentively reading your work should be able to point it out to you.

The following sentence is in reference to a heated debate in a First Nation council meeting.
It was this warrior's name that in the end quieted the descent.
I believe that the last word should be dissent, a synonym  for disagreement. In context, "descent" makes very little sense here.

No one expects perfection. But these are four examples of a variety of errors within the first 30 pages. There are several others but they are similar in nature.

So all that being said...
  • Do I regret buying this book? Hell, no. I love that Chapterhouse is using as many methods as possible to tell their stories.
  • Do I think Neil Dougherty is a terrible writer? Of course not. I can tell in only two chapters that there's a cool story building here.
  • Do I think Chapterhouse released an inferior product? Not really. There is no editor credited, however. I think it's more accurate to say that I think they skipped a step in the process.
Here's what I do think; Spellcheck is NOT equivalent to an editor. Spellcheck can't tell when you mean "descent" and when you mean "dissent". I thought it would point out the missing apostrophe in "...when she read the senders name..." but perhaps not.

No matter how good this book turns out to be, it would have benefited from another set of eyes. If you're currently working on this type of project my suggestion, for what little it's worth, is to find that set of eyes prior to release. You're about to present yourself to the world, find someone willing and able to tell you when your fly's down. You don't want a number of small errors to distract from your wicked story.
